How to install a Soil tensiometer?

  1. Install after irrigation of rainfall, when soil is wet and easy to dig.
  2. Drive a hole into the ground using a section of steel pipe of diameter of 22mm or more to the desired depth.
  3. Leaving a least 1” (25mm) space between the bottom of the gauge and ground to protect the gauge and allow the membrane vent to function.
  4. Do make an overly large or wide hole, the tensiometer must be firmly be seated to make the necessary contact between the tip and soil.
  5. If a wider hole is necessary then make a fluid slurry to fill the hole before installing the tension meter to “grout” it in place.
  6. Don’t make the hole deeper than the tensiometer length, the tip should be against the bottom of the hole.
  7. Note: Tensiometer must be handled with care the tips are fragile and may break if handled roughly.
  8. Push the tensiometer in the prepare hole, always handle by the cap or reservoir (do not push or pull on the gauge).
  9. Avoid twisting the tensiometer counter wise while installing as this can loosen the replaceable tip.
  10. Once installed mount a few inches of soil around the tensiometer to promote drainage and prevent pooling.
